Steps to Take In A Pet Emergency

If you are experiencing a veterinary emergency, follow these steps :

  • Call Ahead If Possible - Call us right away during regular business hours. After hours, call the emergency animal hospital listed above to let them know you are on the way.
  • Follow Instructions Provided - When you are calling the emergency pet hospital informing them of your arrival, they may give you instructions to help you apply first aid or how to make your pet as comfortable as possible. Follow these instructions carefully.
  • Remain Calm - Stay calm and be very careful around your pet. When an animal is in pain it can react negatively towards anyone trying to help and might bite or scratch.
  • Bring Your Pet In For Care - Don't put yourself at risk! Safely bring your pet to our Louisa animal clinic or the after-hours emergency vet location listed above.

  • Do I need to call ahead?

    Tri-County Animal Clinic provides emergency and urgent veterinary care for cats and dogs during our regular operating hours. We always recommend contacting us in advance if you can, however, we understand in emergency situations that isn't always possible. 

    If we can't fit your pet into our schedule, we suggest calling the after-hours emergency vet location shown above. 

  • When is your clinic open?

    Our vets see emergency cases during our regular operating hours:

  • What situations require emergency veterinary care?

    Below are examples of emergencies that require immediate care:

    • Obvious signs of pain or extreme anxiety
    • Severe bleeding or bleeding that doesn't stop
    • Choking, difficulty breathing, or continuous coughing/gagging
    • Refusal to drink for 24 hours or more
    • Fractured bones or severe lameness
    • Seizures and/or staggering
    • Your pet has ingested something poisonous (such as antifreeze, xylitol, chocolate,
    • Bleeding from nose, mouth, rectum, or blood in the urine
    • Inability to urinate or pass feces, or pain associated with urinating or passing feces
    • Severe vomiting or diarrhea; 2+ episodes in 24-hours
    • Injuries to the eye(s)
    • Your pet has ingested something poisonous (such as antifreeze, xylitol, chocolate, rodent poison, etc.)
    • Heat stress or heatstroke
    • Unconsciousness
  • How long will we have to wait to see the vet?

    Our Louisa animal hospital is similar to a human doctor's office—it can be unpredictable and you might have to wait. 

    We can't predict what cases we will see and when they will arrive. If possible, call in advance to find out whether we can provide emergency care for your pet.

  • What happens if my pet needs to stay in the hospital?

    Some veterinary emergencies require intensive overnight care. At Tri-County Animal Clinic we provide overnight care for animals in need.

    While in our care, our dedicated team will treat your cat or dog as if they were our own.

  • What types of animals do you treat?

    Our emergency veterinarians are mostly experienced with cats and dogs, however, will see other small animals, such as birds and rodents, in serious situations.
